Norweigen interest in Gran Canaria growing

Norweigen interest in Gran Canaria is always highest during the 'winter season'when the tropical valleys of the South of the island offer warm protected santuary against the Scandinavian cold. Traditionally the better known areas of Arguinguin, Playa del Ingles and Puerto Rico are first for visitors as property and accommodation availability are more widespread. As visitors become better aquainted with the island and venture further South or inland they discover smaller, more private places to stay such as Playa de Mogan, home to Goldacre Estates situated in the lawned gardens of the Cordial Hotel. Alongside other Northern European visitors, the Norweigen market has also started to settle in with visitors now converting to property owners, taking advantage of the high rental yields available in such exclusive areas. For those looking to be in the centre of Mogan within the Marina area known locally as 'Little Venice'this one bedroom ground floor apartment is a stones throw from the Marina with its varied bars, restaurants and shops. Regular ferry boats run from the Marina to Puerto Rico and Arguinguin along with the local airconditioned buses so even having a car is not essential. Irish Interest on the rise in Gran Canaria

An increase in Irish online searches for winter sun holidays in Gran Canaria has been reported for the first 2 weeks of January 2010 compared to 2009. According to some hotel booking sites Gran Canaria saw a 50% rise ahead of Egypt 46%, Bali 30% and Phuket 27%. Unsurprisingly the weather seams to be the main motivator as Ireland and the UK have experienced extreme cold and snow while the Canaries have been enjoying a winter heat wave. Gran Canaria is well known as a winter sun destination especially amongst Scandinavian visitors, however new flights from the Uk and Ireland are raising the awareness of new markets to Gran Canarias warm winters. Visitors to the South of the Island know the beaches are more sheltered there facing away from any Northerly winds. Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas enjoy huge sand dunes for their beaches while Puerto Rico has a year round marina and further South is the tropical valley of Mogan, an exclusive marina front village with its own beach is particularly sheltered and always a few degrees warmer. Another reason for the interest from Ireland is currency convenience. Being in the Euro means there are no exchange fees to have to pay and holiday costs can be easily calculated without any loss through the exchange rate. Gran Canaria Eagle Eye

Gran Canaria is hoping to take a leaf out of London’s book and install a giant wheel in the centre of Las Palmas. Local paper Canarias Ahora says the island’s tourist board has been in talks with the city council to look for a suitable site for the ‘Eye’, which it says will help sell the capital to visitors.
It appears, however, that not everyone in Las Palmas is keen on the idea and a squabble has already broken out about where best to place it. Although several potential sites have been looked at, none fulfils the established accessibility and safety requirements. Critics say if it is placed too near the city’s main roads drivers will stop to look up at it and could trigger crashes. The spot currently favoured is the plaza at the Santa Catalina Bus Station.
It would seem that it is early days yet as far planning but who knows…..
